Why Danger Symbols Can't Last Forever

I have said this with the previous videos and readings, but I do genuinely feel strongly about the grid now. It's easy to dismiss little details when designing something, but using the grid to create something entirely new that will be recognizable across all cultures and languages is an incredibly difficult task. By aligning things to a grid and keeping to a specific shape set the designers of these toxic waste and hazard symbols managed to create something that has not only been lasting, but also effective. I intend to use the grid method in more of my designs in the future because I find that that sort of structure actually enhances my creativity instead of limiting it.

Designing Icons: The 5 Elements of the Icon Grid

I found the information in this reading to be helpful for this project especially because I have experienced the magic of a grid in the process. At the beginning, when making these glyphs before the grid, it felt overwhelming because of the endless amounts of possibilities. But adding the grid into the design process really helped me constrain my thoughts so that I could latch onto a solid idea. Just having a theme for what I was making wasn't enough because it still left so many options open so I really appreciated having that guiding force when creating. I am officially a grid convert and will be utilizing this strategy in the future for my designing.

Assignment 1 Brainstorming Activitiy

Our group was working towards creating symbols for greek goddesses, and will most likely morph into all mythological women.

Pop, subcultures, and the future of graphic design

The entirety of this article had me thinking about the state of the world and graphic design, but one concept that stood out to me was this firm's "model of the rock band".  Having grown up in a free market economy revolving around capitalism it can be difficult to imagine public design as being more of a collaborative experience, as opposed to a hierarchy constantly delegating pieces. Experimental Jet Set has worked within their rock band model, the idea of a smaller design team that works as a whole, since their inception. I think this approach to design allows for the artistic side of design shine through, allowing each member to truly feel like a valued member for the design team. I have found that when people feel appreciated and like they are important in a work environment, it motivates them to do better work. It would be nice if design firms in the states were able to adopt this model, but in all honesty I don't see that happening.
